Botany
The coconut palm, the only plant classified in the Cocos genus, is native to the tropical regions of Southeast Asia and is cultivated in the Dutch East Indies, the Philippines, and many other tropical regions of Africa and the Americas. It is a slender tree that can reach up to 40 meters in height. At the top of its tall trunk is a crown of large, evenly pinnate leaves. The fruits, commonly called "coconuts", appear about two weeks after flowering and grow rapidly for six months; they consist of large drupes weighing one to two kilograms with a hard, fibrous mesocarp containing the oil-rich endocarp.
