Description

An ancient beauty product for desert women, argan oil is still a traditional remedy among the Berber people against skin damage from wind and sun, in whose local language it is referred to as " liquid gold."
Its use consists of simply applying the pure product with a delicate massage onto the area to be treated for a few minutes until completely absorbed.
It is one of the very few vegetable oils for cosmetic use that is actually rich in essential fatty acids (especially linoleic acid) as well as other antioxidants, first and foremost tocopherol (vitamin E), a known free radical scavenger.
A natural cell regenerator also excellent for treating sunburn and chapped skin, argan oil can rightly be defined as a " natural elixir of skin youth."
Argan oil has strengthening properties, both for hair and for damaged nails; In fact, North African women still pamper their hands by soaking their nails in a paste made from a mixture of lemon juice and argan oil for a few minutes.
Argania spinosa, once endemic to many valleys in northwest Africa, is now reduced to growing almost exclusively in the Souss region of Morocco, a semi-desert triangle bordering the Atlantic Ocean, due to the advance of the desert and the felling of trees for valuable timber. Considering that producing one liter of argan oil requires over a quintal of dried fruit, it's easy to understand why it's considered a "precious" natural product.

Extraction

Argan oil is obtained by cold pressing the dried kernels of the Argania spinosa tree ; it appears as a greenish liquid with a delicate hazelnut aroma.

Cosmetic benefits

Protects normal skin elasticity and firmness.
Prevents and moderates skin aging.
Reduces the appearance of scars and/or acne.

Botany

Argania spinosa is a plant native to North Africa, endemic to the Souss (southeast Morocco). It is a very hardy shrub, up to ten meters tall, with a gnarled trunk, spiny branches, glossy, leathery, lanceolate leaves, yellowish-white flowers, and oval, fleshy drupe-like fruits similar to olives.
It owes its name to "Argana", a village inland from Marrakesh.
