Resins and balms

High-quality grain incense from the most ancient ports of the Middle East.
Frankincense is by far the most well-known aromatic resin; it consists of the latex that oozes from the bark of various species of Boswellia (Burseracee), dried by exposure to air and sun.
Its ritual and purifying uses are lost in the mists of time.
The high quality of our incense is due to the rigorous selection of the original plantations in East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, as well as the careful selection of the packaged grains; Those that are too fine and/or dusty are discarded as they constitute the lowest-quality fraction of the harvest, as the resin is much more oxidized and altered.

Description

Ethiopian Frankincense appears as characteristic, sugary, brown solid masses, formed from the coagulation of the natural resin secreted by a rare Burseracea plant: Boswellia rivae, a xerophilous tree endemic to the desert plateaus of southern Ethiopia (near the region that saw the dawn of Homo sapiens). It is a highly prized natural aromatic product that presents no particular difficulties in harvesting, other than the need to venture into extremely arid and inaccessible areas: the shrub, in fact, secretes the resin spontaneously. In the Horn of Africa, intoxicating oneself with the fragrant fumigations released by burning this precious exudate has been a source of satisfaction since prehistoric times.

Botany

Frankincense (or simply "frankincense") is native to the regions bordering the Red Sea. It is a graceful small tree that grows wild throughout northeastern Africa. It features rich foliage and pinkish-white flowers. Ethiopian Frankincense is a variety endemic to the Ogaden, the desert plateaus of southern Ethiopia, where Homo sapiens first emerged. Its brown, sugary resin has been collected for millennia for use both as a fuel for aromatic fumigations and as a fragrant material itself.
