Extraction
Wintergreen essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the leaves macerated in hot water and is a clear, light yellow liquid with a strong balsamic-woody odor with a medicinal undertone.
Property
Wintergreen essential oil (produced exclusively in the USA) has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. Since it is toxic and irritating, it should always be used with caution and under medical supervision. It blends well with the essential oils of peppermint, oregano, red thyme, and ylang-ylang.
Uses
Wintergreen essential oil is used (mostly in America) as a flavoring ingredient in toothpastes, chewing gum, and soft drinks, including the well-known Coca-Cola. In perfumery, it is occasionally used in the composition of woodsy fragrances. The relevant technical and safety documentation for the product is available upon request.
Botany
Also known as "Canada tea", wintergreen is native to North America, where it grows wild. It is a small, evergreen herbaceous plant up to six inches tall with leathery, serrated oval leaves and pendulous white flowers.
