Extraction
Valerian essential oil is obtained by water distillation of the roots. It appears as a straw-yellow liquid that turns brown as it matures, with a typical woody, grassy-balsamic, warm scent with a mossy undertone.
Property
Valerian has been held in high regard since the Middle Ages, so much so that it was nicknamed "panacea" due to its use against a wide range of ailments (especially those related to nervous tension). Valerian essential oil is completely non-toxic and non-irritating, but should be used sparingly as it can cause sensitization. It has anti-furfural, antiseptic, sedative, and even hypnotic properties. Diffused in a closed environment (perhaps using a diffuser), it promotes drowsiness. It harmonizes well with the essential oils of bucco, cedar, lavender, mandarin, patchouli, petitgrain, pine, rosemary, vetiver, and oakmoss absolute.
Uses
Valerian essential oil is used in fragrances with a mossy, woodland note, as well as a flavoring for tobacco and liqueurs. The relevant technical and safety documentation for this product is available upon request.
Botany
Also known as "catnip", valerian is native to Eurasia, but later became naturalized in America. It is a perennial herbaceous plant that grows primarily in wooded areas. It grows up to one and a half meters tall and has dark leaves, numerous lightly scented purplish-white flowers, and fleshy, highly fragrant superficial roots. It is currently cultivated primarily in Europe, Russia, and China.
