Extraction
Rue essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the fresh green parts and appears as a clear golden yellow liquid with a characteristic dry herbaceous scent with a fruity undertone.
Property
Rue essential oil is toxic orally and a skin irritant, so it should be avoided in aromatherapy. In addition to its antimicrobial and rubefacient properties, it has powerful insect-repellent properties, which can be fully exploited by diffusing it through a diffuser. It blends well with the essential oils of orange, clove, cade, carrot seed, mastic, nutmeg, palo santo, styrax, tea tree, red thyme, and wintergreen.
Uses
Used to flavor grappa and revered as a "magic herb" capable of protecting against "evil spirits", ancient herbal tradition considered rue an antidote to poisons (antitoxic) and even a remedy for various nervous disorders. It is primarily used as a starting material for isolating methyl-nonyl-ketone, the active ingredient in many industrial products designed to repel insects. The relevant technical and safety documentation for the product is available upon request.
Botany
Also known as "herb of grace," rue is native to the Mediterranean basin and grows wild up to 1,000 meters above sea level. It is found mainly in Algeria, Morocco, Spain, Corsica, and Sardinia. It is a bushy herbaceous plant that grows up to eighty centimeters tall with woody branches, small, smooth, bluish-green lobed leaves, and greenish-yellow flowers. The entire plant releases an intense aroma. It is cultivated in Spain, France, and Italy both for its oil and for phytotherapeutic purposes.
