Extraction
Nutmeg essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the shelled, dried, and worm-eaten seeds (also known as nuts). It appears as a clear, colorless or slightly yellowish liquid with an unmistakable warm, sweet, and spicy aroma.
Property
Nutmeg essential oil, non-toxic and non-irritating (when used in moderation), has antiseptic and analgesic properties; in aromatherapy, it is considered a supreme aphrodisiac, even effective in combating impotence. It blends well with all spicy oils as well as the essential oils of orange, coriander, geranium, lavender, litsea cubeba, green mandarin, petitgrain paraguay, rosemary, and even with benzoin and oakmoss absolutes.
Uses
Nutmeg essential oil is used in pharmaceuticals in the formulation of analgesics and lotions, as well as in cosmetics, soaps, and perfumery (especially in men's fragrances). The relevant technical and safety documentation for the product is available upon request.
Botany
Native to the Moluccas, nutmeg is grown primarily in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and the West Indies. It is an evergreen tree that grows up to twenty meters tall, with dense foliage and small, dull yellow flowers.
