Extraction
Citronella essential oil is extracted by steam distillation of the fresh (or partially dried) herb; it is a yellowish liquid with a fresh and powerful citrus-lemon fragrance.
Property
Citronella essential oil, non-toxic and non-irritating, is a proven remedy for oily skin. However, it should be used sparingly, as it can cause dermatitis in some individuals. Therefore, it is advisable to dissolve it beforehand in a vegetable oil (almond or sesame). Its insect-repellent properties are certainly better known. Consider that, well before the invention of DDT, for generations, the most effective preventative remedy against mosquito attacks was an ointment prepared with citronella oil mixed with geranium essential oil and/or cedarwood essential oil: a beneficial effect that can be optimally enhanced by using a diffuser. It blends well with the essential oils of orange, bergamot, cedar, geranium, lemon, and pine.
Uses
Citronella essential oil is used not only in the formulation of various insect repellents against moths, ants, fleas, etc., but also in industrial perfumery: it is from this process that both geraniol and natural citronellal are isolated. The relevant technical and safety documentation for the product is available upon request.
Botany
Native to the island of Ceylon (where it is now cultivated in the southern region), lemongrass is a robust, rhizomatous herbaceous plant up to two meters tall, with a tufted habit and ribbon-like, bluish-green leaves. It is grown in tropical areas throughout the world. The entire plant exudes a seductive citrus scent.
