Extraction
Hyssop essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the leaves and flowering tops. It appears as a yellowish-green liquid with a characteristic warm, spicy scent with a camphoraceous, herbaceous undertone.
Property
Used to purify sacred places and as a sprinkler, hyssop's use is ancient and even mentioned in the Testaments. Completely non-irritating, hyssop essential oil has antimicrobial and antiviral properties; it is also effective in treating eczema, inflammation, and skin ulcers in general. However, it should be used with caution as it is moderately toxic. It blends well with the essential oils of geranium, lavender, myrtle, rosemary, common sage, clary sage, and citrus oils.
Uses
A prized aromatic raw material, hyssop essential oil is used as an ingredient in fragrances that deodorize soaps, perfumes, and cosmetics with a distinctly oriental top note. It is also used as a flavoring in condiments and in the formulation of certain liqueurs, such as the French Chartreuse prepared by monks. The relevant technical and safety documentation for the product is available upon request.
Botany
Native to the Mediterranean region, hyssop now grows throughout Europe, Russia, and the Americas. It is a beautiful, almost evergreen perennial plant, reaching sixty centimeters in height, with a woody stem and purple flowers.
