Extraction
Coriander essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the ripe seeds; it appears as a yellowish liquid (almost colorless) with a characteristic sweetish, woody-spicy, vaguely musky scent.
Property
Coriander essential oil is non-toxic and non-irritating, but if used in high doses, it can cause narcotic effects. It has aphrodisiac, stimulant, purifying, bactericidal, fungicidal, and antioxidant properties. Ancient pharmacopoeia considered it a remedy for asthenia and migraines. It harmonizes well with the essential oils of bergamot, cypress, lemongrass, jasmine, neroli, frankincense, opoponax, petitgrain, pine, clary sage, sandalwood, and ginger.
Uses
The essential oil extracted from coriander seeds is commonly used in pharmacy (as a flavoring in digestive preparations) and as a fragrance component in liqueurs, soaps, and personal care products. It has always been a sought-after tobacco flavoring. The relevant technical and safety documentation for the product is available upon request.
Botany
Also known as "cilantro" and native to Eurasia, coriander later spread to North America. It is a highly aromatic herbaceous plant up to one meter tall, with delicate, bright green leaves and umbels of white flowers.
