Extraction

Camphor essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the wood and roots and its lightest fraction (white camphor) appears as a transparent colorless liquid with a strong balsamic camphoraceous odor.

Property

Relatively non-toxic, white camphor oil is non-irritating, although it remains an aquatic pollutant.
An excellent moth repellent and insect repellent, it is effective against acne, excess sebum, and inflammation, but should still be used with great caution.
It blends well with the essential oils of cajeput, cedar, eucalyptus, lavender, lemon, marjoram, niaouli, and red thyme.

Uses

Camphor oil is used in the formulation of masking agents, soaps, detergents, and disinfectants.

Botany

Native to the Asian islands of Japan and Formosa, camphor is cultivated in Europe, Africa, India, and the Americas.
It is a large, attractive evergreen tree, similar to the lime tree, reaching a height of up to forty meters.
It has large, leathery, oval leaves and small, cream-colored flowers gathered in spring spikes.
A crystalline compound exudes from the bark of specimens over fifty years old: this is raw camphor.
