Extraction
Ambrette essential oil is extracted by steam distilling the plant's seeds (the yield is very low). It appears as a clear, ochre-colored liquid which, after appropriate maturation, releases a rich, musky scent with a very distinctive sweet-floral undertone.
Property
Ambrette seed essential oil, non-toxic and non-irritating, is a well-known and powerful deodorant (in India its scent is described as "divine"), and has antidepressant, stimulant, and antispasmodic properties. It blends beautifully with the essential oils of cypress, copaiba, patchouli, neroli, rose, sandalwood, clary sage, and vetiver.
Uses
Highly prized as a fragrance component in high-end perfumery (musk compositions), the use of ambrette essential oil is, in fact, very limited due to both its extremely limited availability and its cost: it is, in fact, one of the five most precious essential oils in existence. In the past, it was also occasionally used as a flavoring for high-end confectionery and pastries. The relevant technical and safety documentation for the product is available upon request.
Botany
Also known as "muscat mallow" or "hibiscus", Ambrette is a plant native to India. It is an evergreen shrub up to one and a half meters tall, with palmate, hairy leaves and beautiful yellow flowers with a purple corolla. The seeds exude a distinctive musky scent. It is widely cultivated in Indonesia, China, Egypt, Madagascar, and the West Indies.
