Extraction

Frankincense essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the resin exuded from a specially incised stem. It appears as a pale yellow liquid with a warm, sweet, resinous-balsamic scent. It blends well with myrrh absolute, all spicy oils, and the essential oils of orange, basil, bergamot, camphor, cinnamon, cedar, geranium, lavender, neroli, opoponax, Ethiopian frankincense, black pepper, sandalwood, vetiver, and ginger. Combining it with citrus oils produces intriguing notes, effectively toning down the sweetness of the top note.

Property

The therapeutic use of the Frankincense plant is ancient, both in the East and the West.
Since the dawn of time, the resin has been used as a burning material for ritual aromatic fumigations; in Ancient Egypt, it was an indispensable material in embalming processes as well as a basic ingredient in the preparation of cosmetics and perfumes.
Non-toxic and non-irritating, Frankincense essential oil has anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, sedative, and even healing properties; it is indicated for the treatment of dry skin, wrinkles, and scars.

Uses

It is used in perfumery and cosmetics both as a fixative and as an ingredient (especially in the composition of oriental fragrances).

Botany

Native to the regions bordering the Red Sea, Frankincense is also known as Olibanum or Gommathus. It is a graceful small tree with rich foliage and pinkish-white flowers that grows wild throughout northeastern Africa. The resin it produces is harvested primarily in Ethiopia, Somalia, and southern Arabia.
