Extraction

Eucalyptus essential oil is extracted by steam distillation of fresh or partially dried leaves and twigs. It is a colorless liquid with a strong balsamic-camphoraceous odor and a sweet-woody undertone. It blends well with the essential oils of Cedar, Lavender, Lemon, Marjoram, Pine, Rosemary, and Red Thyme.

Property

Eucalyptus essential oil is a renowned remedy for respiratory ailments. It has balsamic, antiseptic, antiviral, purifying, expectorant, parasiticide, and vulnerary properties.
Completely non-toxic externally, a very small amount taken internally, however, can be fatal. It is also excellent for treating herpes and insect bites.

Uses

Eucalyptus essential oil is commonly used in pharmaceuticals in the formulation of inhalation preparations, cough syrups, ointments, and toothpastes.
Soaps and detergents also sometimes include this essential oil among their ingredients.

Botany

Native to Australia (Tasmania), Eucalyptus is a very slender evergreen tree that can reach up to ninety meters in height. Its leaves are oval and bluish when young, becoming narrow and yellowish when mature. Currently, the European countries where it is most widely cultivated (and where its essential oil is distilled) are Spain and Portugal.
