Extraction
Cedarwood essential oil is obtained by steam distilling wood chips (or sawdust) and appears as a yellow-orange liquid with a typical "pencil wood" odor, dry and slightly balsamic. It blends well with benzoin absolute as well as the essential oils of copaiba, cypress, juniper, patchouli, rose, and vetiver.
Property
North American "Indians" prepared decoctions of cedarwood leaves, twigs, and bark, which they used to treat a wide range of ailments. The essential oil of this plant, composed primarily of cedrene, is a valuable source of this active ingredient; non-toxic and non-irritating, it has excellent trichological properties (it counteracts oiliness in hair) and has also proven effective in treating acne. It is also a well-known insect repellent: well before the invention of DDT, for generations, the most effective preventative remedy against mosquito bites was an ointment prepared with cedarwood oil mixed with geranium essential oil and/or citronella essential oil. A diffuser is the best way to benefit from this beneficial effect.
Uses
Given the above characteristics, this oil is widely used in the production of insecticide and moth-repellent sprays. It is also occasionally used in cosmetics and perfumery (composition of dry woody notes).
Botany
Also known as the "Virginia juniper", the cedar is native to North America (Rocky Mountain area). It is found in the Moroccan Atlas Mountains, where it grows wild in dense forests. It is an evergreen conifer that can reach thirty-three meters in height, with a sturdy trunk that can reach one and a half meters in diameter. It has a characteristic reddish heartwood and glaucous, needle-like leaves.
