Botany

Native to China, the orange tree has adapted well to the climate of the Mediterranean region (where it is widely cultivated) as well as in the United States.
Also known as the "Portuguese orange", it is a small evergreen tree, smaller and less hardy than the bitter variety, with a smooth trunk and branches, oval, glossy dark green leaves, long thorns, and fragrant white flowers. The edible fruit has sweet flesh and non-bitter membranes.
