Extraction
Opoponax essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the oleoresin. When exposed to air, it tends to resinify. It appears as a slightly opalescent yellow liquid with a balsamic, warm, spicy, almost animalic odor.
Affinity
Opoponax essential oil blends well with Myrrh and Benzoin absolutes as well as with the essential oils of: Silver Fir, Bergamot, Cistus, Coriander, Costus, Elemi, Frankincense, Neroli, Olibanum, Patchouli, Clary Sage, Sandalwood and Vetiver.
Property
Non-toxic and non-irritating, Opoponax essential oil has antispasmodic, balsamic, sedative and even healing properties; it is an excellent remedy against chapped skin, itching and wrinkles.
Uses
An excellent fixative and excellent fragrance component in perfumery and cosmetics, Opoponax essential oil is also used as a flavouring ingredient in liqueurs, especially when a winey note is needed.
Botany
Also known as "Myrrha bissabol", Opoponax is native to the Horn of Africa (southern Ethiopia - Harrar region - and Somalia). It consists of a large tropical tree similar to Myrrh which, like the latter, exudes an oily gum resin with a typical sweet-woody root scent between its bark and heartwood. When exposed to the elements, the resin darkens and hardens.
