Extraction
Marigold essential oil is extracted by steam distillation of the entire fresh flowering plant. It appears as an orange liquid that releases a distinctive, bitter-green, grassy odor with a vaguely minty undertone.
Affinity
Marigold essential oil blends well with the essential oils of Basil, Bergamot, Bucco, Tarragon, Lavender, Clary Sage, Sandalwood and - at low concentrations - with citrus oils.
Property
The marigold plant is an insect repellent. Its essential oil is a natural antifungal that also has calming, anxiolytic, antidepressant, hypotensive, bronchodilatory, spasmolytic, and anti-inflammatory properties. Given its toxicity, it should be used sparingly. Even skin use requires caution, as it can cause dermatitis; for this reason, it is always best to dissolve it beforehand in a vegetable oil (such as almond or sesame).
Uses
Marigold essential oil is typically used as a flavoring for foods, beverages, and tobacco. It is also occasionally used in pharmacy and perfumery (composition of herbaceous-floral notes). In India, marigold flowers are distilled together with sandalwood oil to obtain a traditional perfumed raw material that has been in vogue for centuries: Attar Genda.
Botany
Also incorrectly called "Mexican marigold", Tagetes is a highly aromatic annual herbaceous plant native to Central and South America. Today, it also grows wild in North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. The essential oil is extracted from the "minute" variety, which can grow over a meter tall. It has oval, pinnate, pale green leaves and characteristic, intense yellow-orange flower heads. It grows up to 2,000 meters above sea level in warm, dry climates, primarily in open spaces.
