Extraction
Lemongrass essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of fresh or partially dried leaves. It appears as an amber-yellow liquid with a fresh, citrus-grassy scent.
Affinity
Lemongrass essential oil harmonizes well with all essential oils extracted from citrus fruits as well as those of: Citronella, Geranium, Mastic, Melissa, Mountain Pine, Verbena and even with Myrrh absolute.
Properties
Lemongrass essential oil, although non-toxic, should be used with caution as it can cause skin irritation. It has toning and analgesic properties; it is also effective against acne. Popular herbal tradition even attributes its properties to counteract both excessive sweating and headaches.
Uses
Lemongrass essential oil is widely used as a fragrance component in cosmetics, perfumes, soaps, and detergents. It is also used as a flavoring in various food products, including alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. It is also one of the preferred raw materials for isolating natural citral.
Botany
Native to Sri Lanka, Lemongrass is also known as " Indian verbena." It is a tall, aromatic herbaceous perennial plant that reaches a height of over two meters, with long, serrated, sharp, lanceolate leaves that, when rubbed, release a strong lemony scent. The inflorescences consist of spikelets enclosed in large, gray-purple panicles. It is grown primarily in Guatemala and India for its essential oil.
