Extraction

Mountain pine essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of needles and twigs. It is a clear, colorless liquid with a sweet, balsamic-woody scent with a spicy undertone.

Affinity

Mountain pine essential oil harmonizes well with the essential oils of: Cedar, Cistus, Juniper, Lavender, Ravensara, Rosemary, Sage, Ylang-ylang and with the oils of other conifers in general.

Property

In Nordic folk medicine, pine enjoys a long-standing tradition, especially in the treatment of respiratory problems. Regarding mountain pine in particular, it should be remembered that folk medicine recommended it as a medicine for kidney and urinary disorders.
Mountain pine essential oil (or pumilio), although non-toxic, is a skin irritant; it is the most valuable pine essence and the most popular in perfumery due to its delicate nature, which makes it blend well with fragrances. It has antitussive, expectorant, antiseptic, antiviral, balsamic, rubefacient, and deodorant properties.

Uses

Mountain pine essential oil, in addition to being used in pharmaceutical preparations to combat coughs, rhinitis and colds, is commonly used in cosmetics and soap making in the composition of "leathery" and "woody" fragrances.

Botany

Also known as the "Alpine Pine" or "Pumilio Pine", the mountain pine is native to the mountainous regions of central and southern Europe. It is a pyramidal evergreen shrub that grows up to twelve meters tall, with dark gray bark, stiff, dark green needle-like leaves gathered in clusters, and small, oval-conical cones.
