Property
Cistus essential oil is one of the first aromatic materials used in the ancient world for which we have reliable mention. Non-toxic and non-irritating, it has balsamic, tonic, antiseptic, and deodorant properties. Considered a powerful anti-snoring agent, this essence was once diffused in the bedroom.
Uses
Cistus essential oil is now used both as a fragrance component and as a fixative in lotions, oriental perfumes, and aftershaves. It is also used in various processes in the food and beverage industry.
Botany
Also known as "Ladanum" or "Labdanum", Cistus is native to the mountainous regions of the Middle East. It is found throughout the Mediterranean region (particularly the Iberian Peninsula). It is a sticky shrub that grows up to three meters tall, with hairy leaves on the underside and fragrant white flowers. It is an endemic species of the Mediterranean scrub.
