Volatile liquid with a mild herbaceous odor.
Property
Pyrethrins and pyrethroids (the main components of Pyrethrum extract) possess chemical properties that disrupt the normal functioning of the nervous system of insects. Their action is initially stimulant (this is where their well-known repellent and/or flushing effects come from); they subsequently produce complete motor paralysis, killing many insect species.
In addition to its insecticidal nature, Pyrethrum (the most effective insect killing product) has significant insect repellent properties against various species of diptera (mosquitoes, etc.) and other insects, such as those that infest stored food products or parasites of domestic animals.
Long-term studies on the potential toxicity of Pyrethrum have largely demonstrated that it is certainly a safe active ingredient; several animal species have suffered no pathological consequences from oral, cutaneous, or inhalation administration. It is therefore a product that is almost completely non-toxic to mammalian organisms.
Furthermore, thanks to its photolability, from an environmental point of view, pyrethrum is truly an eco-friendly product, having no impact.
For all these characteristics, after thousands of years of use in almost every region of the world, pyrethrum continues to be used successfully: an insecticide and insect repellent that is as modern as it is versatile.
