Extraction

Turmeric essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the boiled, cleaned, and sun-dried rhizome; it appears as a transparent, fluorescent yellow-orange liquid with a fresh, woody-spicy odor.

Properties

Turmeric essential oil is moderately toxic and irritating; it has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, bactericidal, rubefacient, and stimulant properties.
It blends well with the essential oils of: Cistus, Frankincense, Iris, Clary Sage, Ylang-ylang, and Ginger.

Uses

Turmeric essential oil is used as a fragrance component in some oriental-inspired perfumes.

Botany

Also known as "Indian Saffron", turmeric is native to southern Asia and widely cultivated in India, China, Indonesia, Jamaica, and Haiti.
It is a tropical herbaceous plant up to one meter tall with long, lanceolate leaves, a fleshy, orange root (on the inside), and dull yellow flowers.
