Extraction
Thyme essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the leaves and flowering tops and appears as a clear liquid with an intense red-orange color that releases a powerful, warm, herbaceous-spicy odor, very typical.
Property
Red thyme essential oil has antimicrobial (disinfectant), antiseptic, balsamic, bactericidal, parasiticide, tonic, and vermifuge properties. Being toxic, caustic, and irritating, it should always be used in extreme moderation. It is an excellent natural remedy for treating oily skin, acne, ulcers, wounds, and insect bites, but should only be used in a low concentration mixed with a carrier (e.g., sweet almond oil or sesame oil).
It blends well with the essential oils of bergamot, lavender, lemon, marjoram, lemon balm, pine, ravensara, and rosemary.

Uses
It is used as a fragrance component in various personal hygiene products and in the food industry (as a meat preservative). It is also the raw material for isolating thymol, a molecule primarily used in pharmaceuticals.
