Extraction
Niaouli essential oil is extracted by steam distillation of the leaves and twigs and is a clear, almost colorless liquid with a strong, fresh, balsamic, camphoraceous odor.
Properties
Niaouli essential oil was imported to Europe from the French East Indies.
Completely non-toxic and non-irritating, it has balsamic, antiseptic, antiviral, purifying, expectorant, and parasiticide properties. It is an effective remedy for oily skin and is also recommended for soothing insect bites, acne, and burns.
It blends well with the essential oils of cajeput, cedar, eucalyptus, lavender, lemon, marjoram, myrtle, and red thyme.

Botany
Also known as "Gomenolo", the Niaouli is an evergreen tree up to twenty meters tall that grows wild throughout most of Oceania. It has a flexible trunk with pale bark, yellow flowers clustered in spikes, and linear, oval leaves that, when crushed, release a strong balsamic scent.
