Extraction
Sandalwood essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of dried and powdered wood; it appears as a pale yellow, viscous liquid with a woody, sweetish, and very persistent scent.
Property
Sandalwood essential oil has aphrodisiac, antidepressant, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and bactericidal properties. It is an excellent rehydrator and also has a beneficial effect on acne-prone skin.
It blends well with benzoin absolute as well as the essential oils of agarwood, ambrette, cypress, copaiba, juniper, lavender, opoponax, palmarosa, patchouli, rose, clary sage, ylang-ylang, vetiver, and ginger.

Uses
Sandalwood essential oil is used both as a fragrance component and as a fixative in cosmetics and perfumery (especially in the composition of oriental-woody notes). Many high-end incense sticks also contain sandalwood essential oil.

Botany
Native to tropical Asia (especially southern India, Sri Lanka, and Malaysia), sandalwood is a small, evergreen parasitic tree that grows up to nine meters tall. It has a gray-brown trunk, smooth, thin branches, leathery leaves, and pinkish-purple flowers. However, plants are not suitable for essential oil production until they reach thirty years of age. It is currently a protected botanical species.
