Extraction

Litsea cubeba essential oil is obtained by steam distilling the plant's seeds and leaves and appears as a clear, straw-yellow liquid with a fresh, fruity scent reminiscent of lemon.

Properties

Litsea cubeba essential oil, non-toxic and non-irritating, is known in aromatherapy for its refreshing and antidepressant properties. It is a remedy for acne and dermatitis in general, but is also effective in treating skin characterized by excessive sweating.
It blends well with all citrus oils (particularly lemon, neroli, and grapefruit), with verbena, and with spicy oils.

Uses

Litsea cubeba essential oil is widely used in the formulation of air fresheners, colognes, soaps, and personal hygiene products. The fruit beverage industry uses it as a classic flavoring, but its most significant use is certainly as a starting material for both the isolation of natural citral and the synthesis of vitamin A.

Botany

Also known as "tropical verbena" and native to China (where it is called "May Chang"), Litsea cubeba is also traditionally grown in Taiwan and Japan.
It is a small, evergreen tropical tree with fragrant leaves and flowers. Its small fruits are shaped like peppercorns. Its heartwood is prized for its hardwood.
