Extraction

Salvia officinalis essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the dried leaves. It appears as a clear yellow liquid with a characteristic warm, herbaceous, spicy, and slightly camphoraceous scent.

Property

Salvia officinalis essential oil (an effective antiseptic) is toxic as is. Therefore, it has no aromatherapeutic uses.
It blends well with the essential oils of hyssop, lavender, rosewood, lemon, ravensara, rosemary, and citrus oils.

Uses

Thanks to its fixative properties, the essential oil obtained from Salvia officinalis is used as a fragrance component in detergents, shampoos, soaps, and perfumes (men's fragrances). It is also a sought-after starting material for obtaining natural antioxidants.

Botany

Also known as "Greek Tea", Sage officinalis is native to the Mediterranean region. Cultivated throughout the world, it is a bushy herbaceous plant up to eighty centimeters tall with a woody stem at the base, delicate, silvery, oval-shaped leaves, and deep blue or purple flowers.
