Extraction

Clary sage essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the flowering tops and leaves. It appears as a slightly greenish (almost colorless) liquid with a characteristic herbaceous, nutty scent.

Property

Clary sage essential oil has antidepressant, antiseptic, aphrodisiac, bactericidal, digestive, and sedative properties. Completely non-toxic and non-irritating, it is a valuable carminative and an effective sebum regulator. In the past, it was used as a supreme remedy for frigidity and impotence.
It harmonizes well with the essential oils of ambrette, bergamot, cardamom, cedar, cistus, coriander, geranium, juniper, frankincense, opoponax, pine, and citrus oils.

Uses

Clary sage essential oil is currently used in cosmetics, perfumery, and soap making, both as a fragrance component and as a fixative, as well as in the food and beverage industries, especially in the production of Moscato wine.

Botany

Also known as "clay sage", clary sage is native to southern Europe.
Cultivated throughout the world, it is a decorative herbaceous plant up to one meter tall, with large, velvety light green leaves and small blue flowers.
