Cedar wood

Cedarwood essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of wood chips (or sawdust) and appears as an orange-yellow liquid with a typical "pencil wood" odor, dry, slightly balsamic.

The essential oil of this plant, composed mostly of Cedrene, is a valuable source of this active ingredient; non-toxic and non-irritating, it has excellent trichological properties (it combats oiliness in hair) and has also proven effective in treating acne. It is also a well-known insect repellent: well before the invention of DDT, for generations, the most effective preventative remedy against mosquito attacks was an ointment prepared with Cedarwood oil mixed with Geranium essential oil and/or Citronella essential oil. A diffuser is the best way to benefit from this beneficial effect.
It blends well with Benzoin absolute as well as the essential oils of Copaiba, Cypress, Juniper, Patchouli, Rose, and Vetiver.

Given its insect-repellent nature, cedarwood essential oil is widely used in the production of insecticide and moth-repellent sprays.
It is also occasionally used in cosmetics and perfumery (composition of dry woody notes).

Also known as the "Virginia juniper", the cedar is native to North America (Rocky Mountain area). It is found in the Moroccan Atlas Mountains, where it grows wild in dense forests. It is an evergreen conifer that can reach thirty-three meters in height, with a sturdy trunk that can reach one and a half meters in diameter. It has a characteristic reddish heartwood and glaucous, needle-like leaves.
