Extraction

Geranium essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of leaves, stalks and flowers and is a clear, deep green liquid with a powerful, spicy, pinkish-green scent.

Property

Geranium essential oil, non-toxic and non-irritating, has antidepressant, healing, deodorant, fungicidal, and vulnerary properties; it is an excellent remedy for acne, dermatitis, eczema, burns, and parasites. It is also well-known as an insect repellent: well before the invention of DDT, for generations, the most effective preventative remedy against mosquito attacks was an ointment prepared with geranium oil mixed with citronella essential oil and/or cedarwood essential oil. A diffuser is the best way to take advantage of this beneficial effect.
It harmonizes excellently with the essential oils of bergamot, clove, juniper, neroli, patchouli, ravensara, sandalwood, and all citrus oils.

The highly prized essential oil of African geranium is used as a fragrance component in cosmetic products of all kinds.
It is a widely used flavoring in the food industry.

Botany

Also known as "Pelargonium", geranium is native to southern Africa and is cultivated in several countries, primarily Réunion, Egypt, and Russia, where most of the essential oil is produced. It is a shrubby plant with a bushy habit, up to one meter and twenty centimeters tall, entirely aromatic, with peltate leaves and small pink flowers. Including hybrids, there are approximately seven hundred varieties.
