Absolute oils
Unlike essential oils, absolute oils are obtained through solvent extraction, either from the concrete or directly from the plant material. They therefore represent two distinct categories of aromatic extracts. Absolutes are generally produced when distillation is not feasible; however, it should be noted that in certain cases both extraction methods may be applied, each favoring different components—as is commonly the case with rose flowers.
On average, compared to essential oils, absolutes are more viscous and their main constituents consist of less volatile (heavier) aromatic molecules, which confer a marked persistence. Their applications fully mirror those of essential oils, namely: perfumery (often in high-end compositions), cosmetics, soap making, candle making, and others.
