CADEJuniperus oxycedrus (Cupressacee)
Origin: Spagna
Native to southern France, it is also called "Red Juniper" or "Prickly Cedar".
It is an evergreen tree with greyish bark that can grow over five metres tall; it has long, dark needles and berries the size of a hazelnut which, ripening, take on the typical reddish-brown colour.
It is a common species in almost all of Europe and in North Africa (Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia).
The tar is extracted mainly in Spain and on the Balkan Peninsula.
EXTRACTION OLFACTIVE AFFINITIES The essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the tar obtained beforehand via destructive distillation of fruits and twigs; it is a brown liquid with a penetrating woody, smoky, dry aroma that instantly recalls the smell of leather or of Birch tar. It combines well with the essential oils of: Birch, Cinnamon leaf, Clove, Mastic, Nutmeg, Oregano, Mountain pine, Storax, Tea tree, Red thyme and Wintergreen.
PROPERTIES (according to popular herbalist tradition)
Cade essential oil, completely non-toxic and non-irritating, has antiseptic, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and anti-itch properties; it should be used cautiously, however, on the skin as it may occasionally give rise to sensitisation: hence it is a good rule to always convey it with a vegetable oil (for example Sweet almond oil or Sesame oil).
For a long time it was one of the main natural remedies to treat eczema and dermatitis.
The old herbalist tradition includes this essential oil as a remedy also against dandruff, and as an excellent medication for wounds and skin ulceration.
Trova principale utilizzo nella farmaceutica quale solvente per principi attivi; più insolito l'impiego quale componente di fragranza in profumeria, cosmetica e saponeria di tipo legnoso-speziato e coriaceo.
