Origin: France
Verbena, also known as vervain, is native to Chile and Argentina. It's now grown in France, Tunisia, Algeria and China. An elegant perennial shrub, verbena grows to a height of five metres. It has a woody stem, pale green lanceolate leaves and purple flowers. It's commonly grown as an ornamental plant.
The dried leaves have been used for making infusions and alcohol for centuries.
EXTRACTION
OLFACTIVE AFFINITIES
The essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the green parts of the plant and is a clear, light olive-yellow liquid with a fresh, fruity, lemony fragrance with a floral undertone. It combines well with the essential oils of Elemi, Frankincense, Lemon, Melissa, Neroli, Olibanum, Palmarosa and citrus oils in general.

LIPPIA CITRIODORA  Essential oil of Verbena is non-toxic and non-irritating, and used in aromatherapy for its anti-septic, anti-spasmodic and sedative properties. The natural citral contained in this oil can produce a phototoxic reaction in some people; when used on the skin, therefore, it should always be diluted in a vegetable oil like (Almond or Sesame).
Used in perfumery for over two centuries in the preparation of so-called "citrus colognes" (for instance the famous Eau de Verveine, which is still widely used in Europe and America), Verbena oil recently fell subject to stringent IFRA restrictions and its use is now fairly limited. It can no longer be used in luxury soaps and cosmetics, and since it is now produced in smaller quantities than ever, it is also more precious and difficult to find than ever. Natural and authentic Verbena oil has always been hard to come by: and in recent decades, in fact, the market has been plagued by oils that have been adulterated (and sometimes totally falsified) with citric substances of far inferior quality.
