STAR ANISEIllicium verum (Illiaciacee)

Origin: Japan/Vietnam
Originally found in tropical Asia. Star anise grows spontaneously in southeast China, Vietnam, India and Japan.
An evergreen tropical tree with a slender trunk, it can grow to a height of twelve metres. Its distinctive star-shaped fruits contain up to thirty seeds each.
EXTRACTION
OLFACTIVE AFFINITIES
The essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the partly-dried fruit and is a transparent, light yellow liquid with a sweet, spicy fragrance that's reminiscent of liquorice. It combines well with the essential oils of Caraway, Dill, Elemi, Mint, Nutmeg and all spicy or citrus oils in general.

ILLICIUM VERUM  In China, star anise has been used for treating digestive ailments and various respiratory problems for over 1300 years.
The essential oil of star anise is non-toxic and non-irritant. If used in excessive quantities it may have mildly narcotic effects. It has stimulant and expectorant properties.
It's used as a flavouring agent in toothpastes and in various kinds of pharmaceutical preparations. It's also widely used as a fragrance component in soaps, detergents and cosmetics, and in the food industry (sweets and beverages).
