ETHIOPIAN OLIBANUM NATURAL INCENSE FROM THE OGADEN DESERT Ethiopian Olibanum, a close relative of frankincense, is a solid brown substance similar in appearance to coarse, unrefined sugar. It is obtained by hardening the natural resin secreted by a rare member of the Burseracea family: Boswellia rivae, a dryland plant which is endemic to the desert plateaus of southern Ethiopia (near the region in which Homo sapiens first emerged). Olibanum is a highly prized natural aromatic product which grows in an extremely arid and remote environment. Once found, though, it's easy to harvest, as the shrub secretes the resin spontaneously. In the Horn of Africa, the intoxicating vapours released when this precious substance is burned have been enjoyed since prehistoric times. |
