NUTMEGMyristica fragrans (Myristicacee)
Origin: Java
Originally from the Molucca Islands, nutmeg is principally cultivated in Indonesia, Sri Lanka and the West Indies.
An evergreen tree that grows to a height of twenty metres, it has dense foliage and small, dark yellow flowers.
EXTRACTION OLFACTIVE AFFINITIES The essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the shelled, dried, worm-eaten seeds (also known as nuts). The oil is transparent and colourless (or occasionally with a slightly yellow tinge), with an unmistakable, warm, spicy-sweet fragrance. It combines well with all spice oils and the essential oils of Coriander, Geranium, Lavender, Litsea cubeba, Mandarin, Orange, Paraguayan petitgrain, Rosemary and with Benzoin and Oakmoss absolutes.
PROPERTIES (according to popular herbalist tradition)
Nutmeg is valued in the West as well as the East as a remedy for kidney, digestive and intestinal ailments.
Essential oil of nutmeg is non-toxic and non-irritating (if used with moderation) and has anti-septic and analgesic properties. In aromatherapy it's considered a powerful aphrodisiac and even a cure for impotence.
It's used pharmaceutically (in the formulation of painkillers and lotions) and in cosmetics, soaps and perfumes (especially masculine fragrances).
