NIAOULYMelaleuca quinquenervia (Myrtacee)
Origin: Australia
Also known as the paperbark tree, the niaouli is an evergreen tree that reaches a height of twenty metres. It grows spontaneously practically all over Oceania. It has a flexible trunk with a light bark, yellow flowers gathered in spikes and ovate, linear leaves that give off a strongly balsamic smell when rubbed.
EXTRACTION OLFACTIVE AFFINITIES The essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the leaves and twigs. It is a transparent, almost colourless liquid with a strong, fresh, camphoraceous and balmy scent. It combines well with the essential oils of Cajeput, Citron, Eucalyptus, Lavender, Lemon, Marjoram, Myrtle and Red thyme.
PROPERTIES (according to popular herbalist tradition)
Essential oil of niaouli is imported to Europe from New Caledonia.
Totally non-toxic and non-irritant, essential oil of niaouli has balsamic, anti-septic, anti-viral, cleansing, expectorant and parasiticide properties; it's an effective remedy for oily skin and is also indicated as a palliative for insect bites, acne and burns.
In the pharmaceuticals industry it's used as an ingredient in mouthwashes, cough medicines and toothpastes.
