UNRIPE MANDARINCitrus reticulata (Rutacee)
Origin: Italy (Sicily)
Originally from southern China, the Mandarin was brought to Europe in 1805 and is now principally cultivated in Italy, Spain, Algeria and Brazil.
It's an evergreen tree with glossy leaves, fragrant flowers and fleshy fruit.
Its name derives from the traditional gift made to the Mandarins of China.
EXTRACTION OLFACTIVE AFFINITIES The essential oil is obtained by cold pressing the fresh peels of the unripe fruit, and is a clear, bright green liquid with a fresh, citric, almost floral fragrance that’s quite unique. It combines well with all the other citrus oils (especially Neroli) and with spice oils such Cinnamon, Clove and Nutmeg.
PROPERTIES (according to popular herbalist tradition)
Essential oil of Mandarin is non-toxic and non-irritant, and a powerful remedy for acne and oily skin; exposure to sunlight should be avoided after application to the skin, however, as it is mildly phototoxic.
It was formerly used as a treatment for insomnia and nervous tension.
Nowadays it’s used as a fragrance component in cosmetics, perfumes and soaps, and as a flavouring agent in confectionery, soft drinks and spirits.
