MATRIC. CHAMOMILEChamomilla recutita (Asteracee)
Origin: Europe
Also known as German camomile, and originally found in Europe and northwest Asia. Nowadays it's widely cultivated in eastern Europe, especially Hungary. Matricaria camomile is an intensely fragrant herbaceous plant that grows to a height of sixty centimetres, with an erect stem, laciniate leaves and white flowers similar to those of the daisy.
It grows spontaneously in open countryside, where it often becomes invasive.
EXTRACTION OLFACTIVE AFFINITIES The essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the flowers. The yield is under 2%. It's a viscous, ink-blue liquid, with a warm, intensely grassy and slightly cloying scent. It combines well with the essential oils of African geranium, Bergamot, Clary sage, Labdanum, Lavender, Lemon, Marjoram, Neroli, Patchouli, Rose, Ylang-ylang and Benzoin absolute oil.
PROPERTIES (according to popular herbalist tradition) Non-toxic and non-irritating, essential oil of camomile has excellent anti-septic properties and is traditionally used in the treatment of cuts, burns, insect bites and acne. In aromatherapy, it's widely used as a remedy for headaches and insomnia.
An excellent fixative, it's widely used in anti-septic ointments and tonics, and as a scent component in fine fragrances, cosmetics and soaps.
