THE PRIZED BALSAMIC RESIN FROM TROPICAL ASIA.
The Styrax benzoin (Styracaceae) is a rather large tree (it can reach heights of twenty metres) which grows exclusively in Tropical Asia. Its trunk is cut to release a pathological serum which hardens when exposed to the sun and air. This substance collected from the trees goes by the name of Benzoin (also called Benzoin Rubber or Java Incense). Of the two varieties sold commercially, the one from Siam and mostly from the Malacca peninsula is the only one considered to be of value. In eastern countries, for thousands of years, it has been believed that the pleasant vapours produced when burning Benzoin Rubber keep away all types of adversities. In China it was used for medicinal purposes for many, many years (digestive, antiseptic, etc.). In western countries it is still traditionally used in the production of high class perfumes where its alcoholic tincture is often an irreplaceable ingredient. |
