NARCISSUS
Also known as poet's daffodil, the narcissus is a bulbous plant that grows to a height of fifty centimetres. It has long, sword-shaped leaves and white, highly fragrant flowers. Originally from the eastern Mediterranean, it has long been established in southern France.
EXTRACTION
OLFACTIVE AFFINITIES
Solvent extraction of the fresh flowers yields a concrete essence which is then distilled to obtain an absolute. This absolute is an orange liquid with a sweet, potent, grassy-green fragrance and a strong floral-grassy undertone. It combines well with the essential oils of Clove, Neroli, Mimosa, Rose, Sandalwood, Ylang-ylang, and floral and spicy oils.

Narcissus absolute is a narcotic with anti-spasmodic properties; it is also an extremely potent aromatic agent and should be used with moderation to avoid undesirable side effects. Narcissus flowers themselves have such a potent scent that even just a few flowers in a closed environment can cause headaches and dizziness.
The perfumers of ancient Rome used narcissum, a solid ointment made from narcissus flowers, as an ingredient in their scents. In the Arab world, narcissus was formerly considered as aphrodisiac and a remedy for baldness. In India it's still used in anointing rituals (together with Rose, Sandalwood and Jasmine oils) before prayers in Hindu temples.
Narcissus absolute is a rare and costly substance that's only used in high-class perfumes with narcotic/floral notes.
