Originally from the Australian island of Tasmania, eucalyptus is a very slender evergreen tree that can grow as tall as ninety metres. The leaves are ovate and bluish in the young plant, becoming narrower and yellower as the tree grows. At present, eucalyptus is predominantly cultivated (and the essential oil produced) in Spain and Portugal.
EXTRACTION
OLFACTIVE AFFINITIES
The essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the fresh or partly dried leaves and twigs. It is a colourless liquid with a balmy, camphoraceous scent and a sweet, woody undertone. It combines well with the essential oils of Citron, Lavender, Lemon, Marjoram, Pine, Red thyme and Rosemary.
PROPERTIES

Essential oil of eucalyptus is widely used as a remedy for respiratory ailments. It has balsamic, anti-septic, anti-viral, cleansing, expectorant, anti-parasite and vulnerary properties.
Totally non-toxic when used externally, it can prove fatal when taken internally, even in tiny doses. Essential oil of eucalyptus is excellent as a treatment for herpes and insect bites.
It's used as an ingredient in medicines such as inhalation treatments, cough syrups, ointments and toothpastes.
Essential oil of eucalyptus is occasionally used in soaps and detergents.
