BITTER ORANGE

Originally found in the Far East, the bitter orange has adapted well to the Mediterranean climate and now grows extensively throughout this region.
Also known as the Seville orange, it grows on an evergreen tree which can reach a height of ten metres, with smooth trunk and branches, glossy dark green ovate leaves, thorns, and fragrant white flowers. The fruit is smaller and darker than the sweet orange.
The bitter orange is highly resistant to disease and is widely used as a rootstock for grafts of other citrus varieties.

The essential oil is obtained from cold pressing of the fresh peels, and is a limpid, dark yellow liquid with a dry, citric scent and a floral undertone that combines well with the essential oils of Cinnamon, Clary sage, Clove, Lavender, Lemon, Neroli, Nutmeg and Myrrh absolute.

Essential oil of bitter Orange is totally non-toxic and a natural anti-depressant that has anti-inflammatory, anti-septic, astringent, bactericidal, fungicidal and tonic properties.
It's also excellent as a treatment for lustreless and oily skin. It should always be used in moderation, however, as it's phototoxic.
It's used in perfumes, cosmetics, soaps and detergents, as well as the food industry, where it's a common flavouring agent.
